Social Justice and Progressives

“Social justice” is a term that has been bandied about recently. Glenn Beck has said that Progressives are using “social justice” to transform America into what they want. Progressives have said that people like Glenn Beck use the term “social justice” to promote fear among the American people.

So, the question is: “What is social justice?”

According to Dictionary.com, social justice means “the distribution of advantages and disadvantages within a society.” So, by definition, the concept of “social justice” focuses on advantages and disadvantages. With such a broad definition, we need to continue our research to see whether or not progressives are actually seeking “social justice” within our society.

According to Wikipedia.com, the concept of “social justice” takes on a more focused meaning. “Social justice” is intent on creating an egalitarian society. Now, the obvious question is “How can that be done?” “Social justice” wants to establish “economic egalitarianism” through progressive taxation, income redistribution, and even property redistribution.

Hmmm…progressive taxation?? Income redistribution?? Those seem familiar. Oh, I remember where I heard them. Let’s continue.

Progressive taxation means that the more you make the more you pay in taxes. As stated on AlterNet.org:

“Progressive taxation -- taxing the wealthy at higher rates than the poor…”

Does this sound familiar now? The Obama Administration, starting with Candidate Obama, has said all along that he intended to raise taxes on the “rich” which he defined as individuals making more than $250,000 a year. What do you mean I don’t know what I am talking about?

In his conversation with “Joe the Plumber”, Obama said:

“…I don’t want to punish your success. I just want to make sure that everyone who is behind you. That they have got a chance at success too…I think when you spread the wealth around that it’s good for everybody.”

Obama’s tax plan is one every politician would love, especially if you are a Progressive. He is going to raise taxes on the rich by allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire. The top two tax brackets would return to 36% and 39% as they were under the Clinton Administration. According to TurboTax (Geithner’s program), there are 10 new taxes or credits that will be changed in 2011 alone.

OK, so many things I could say but I am going to maintain my focus for now. However, one of the tenets of “social justice” has been fulfilled by the Progressives.

The concept of “social justice” wants to redistribute wealth to create a more egalitarian society. Obama clearly says that he wants to spread the wealth around in his conversation with “Joe the Pumber.”

What? Not good enough?? OK.

From the Washington Examiner and YouTube clips as well:

Health reform is "an income shift," Democratic Sen. Max Baucus said on March 25. "It is a shift, a leveling, to help lower income, middle income Americans."

Former DNC Chairman, Howard Dean, on CNBC while talking about Obamacare, said: “This is a form of redistribution."

Joe Biden said: "If you call that a 'redistribution of income' -- well, so be it. I don't call it that. I call it just being fair…"It's about time we get a little tax equity here."

So, well-known Progressives, have clearly said that they want to redistribute the wealth and are using Obamacare as a means to that end. A second basic tenet of “social justice” has been fulfilled by the Progressives.

Did Glenn Beck actually get it right? Is that possible?

I have to point this out. They want to make themselves look good by saying that they are letting the cuts expire...they did not say they were raising taxes. Hate to break it to you, if my taxes go up; then you raised them. It doesn't matter how you do it.

True, but the average American will consider it a tax increase. Why, you ask? Simple, their went up. When is this happening? On Obama's watch.

Why do you think the Progressives did not vote on extending the cuts prior to the election? They expect to lost control of Congress and they want to turn this back on the Republicans.

Question: What about the other taxes that are not getting as much air time on the news? Those taxes are going up, i.e. raised.

Chris

... the average American will consider it a tax increase

Rightly so. As you say, the taxes will in reality increase. By what logic would those advocating the tax cuts want them to simply stop at the end of 2010?

It was a compromise.

Thanks TiG.

I know that part of politics is being good at semantics, but everyone has to also look at this from the perspective of an average person which is:

"My taxes went up. I don't care what you call it."

But straight to the point ... this is blatant. When the Bush tax cuts expire, the IRS will issue tax table updates that will force employers to take out more money from paychecks. In addition, when we pay our taxes, those same tables will cause TurboTax, CPAs, and manual methods to calculate a higher tax burden.

Taxes will go up. We will be forced to hand over more of our money to the government. (A government that demonstrates both incompetence and irresponsibility when it comes to fiscal matters. That is, we can bet HUGE that our additional tax dollars will NOT go to paying down the National debt but, rather, will encourage even more irresponsible spending.)

Now if this tax hike was targeted to effect a truly positive end result then we might have something to talk about.

Preaching to the choir.

I agree with you on accounts. This administration has spent enough money already and can take the next couple of years off.

Just pointing out the connection between "social justice" and the fact that Progressives are intended on implementing it.

Sick of paying taxes? You too can be poor. Give it all away and you too can enjoy a life free from the burden of excess taxation and intrusive IRS laws. And if you stop working altogether, you can live a life of leisure and you might even qualify for a generous $200 monthly food allotment. If you lay off or fire yourself, you might even qualify for up to six months of unemployment compensation, perhaps longer if your states unemployment rate is over 8%.

You can temporarily retire, with peace of mind, knowing that you will be receiving a huge weekly benefit of nearly $400, which is taxable of course. You too can be one of the 1000 millionaires receiving unemployment benefits. Think of the prestige. Don't get too comfortable though, if you qualify for unemployment insurance. It can be stopped at any time, especially if you don't look for work. There's that nasty word again.

If times get tough though, you could even qualify for welfare. Just drag the kids into one of our few hot, smelly, overcrowded welfare offices, where you will be treated to the delightful experience of spending countless hours of social mingling with your fellow downtrodden brothers and sisters. There is a catch though: if you get welfare, you must look for work or train for another job. Bummer.

But suppose you don't qualify for these wonderful perquisites, what then? If you're of retirement age, you will be permanently endowed with a regular monthly check until death, because you worked hard all your life, and and you paid for your retirement, so you are entitled to it - thus, the word entitlement. If you receive Social Security, you have once again reached the elite class of society, who may enjoy the privilege of receiving a government check, even if you don't need it. If you're one of the lucky ones, your Social Security benefit might even be enough to cover your rent.

If everything else fails, there's always prison. It offers room and board for a very reasonable price. You could even earn a little extra income while you are breaking your way in. What's more, you'll be sticking the government for nearly $35,000/year - nearly double the maximum Social Security benefit. As a special bonus, you will finally be able to escape the excessive nagging of that clinging spouse or girlfriend. Even better, there are no screaming kids allowed and you can kiss those annoying child support payments goodbye. Prison is the care free retreat you've been longing for. Why kill yourself over your miserable life, when the government is just waiting to take care of you?

Join the ranks of the poor today! New recruits are being added daily. This is the opportunity you've been waiting for. Show the government that you won't be held hostage to taxes. Never work again. Live off the fat of the government. It is truly the adventure of a lifetime; one you will never forget.

Most of the post is obviously sarcasm. Wonderful job--loved it. However, you missed a serious point.

If the working people in this country have to pay more for those who don't; then what is my incentive to work? How many people would gladly stay at home, watch TV, and not work?

Watch the clip of Howard Dean. Even he says that wealth redistribution carried too far is a bad thing. Hmmm...how long would that take before it went too far? With the current attitude of what can the government do for me, I would say not very long.

Everyone knows the government spends too, much but one man's wine is another man's poison. The federal government is responsible for defending the country, but does that mean that we need a military base in every country which allows it? The only entitlement programs which allows people to stay at home without looking for work are Social Security and Medicare. Since people pay regular payroll taxes for this benefit throughout their work life, they have a reasonable expectation to receive these benefits. There are simply too many elected to government office, who regard the government as their personal piggy bank to reward their contributors and themselves. These are not the people who receive entitlements, which is what I was illustrating with my comments. Living off of entitlements is a miserable existence, unless they are supplemented by other income, which usually affects benefits received.

Huge campaign costs really contribute to this culture of political entitlement. Candidates are allowed to spend as much as they want on a campaign, so they do. Once elected, this practice of spending carries into government, so they continue to throw money at everything, because it's all they know how to do. Everything they do is politically motivated and designed to keep them in office, so once things go wrong, they don't know how to manage it or fix it so they just throw more money at it. Taxes are too high and entitlements do cost too much, but it's not because the government is overly generous to the poor. It's all the result of poor planning, management, and control. If we forced candidates to run their campaigns on a reasonable budget, perhaps they would understand the meaning of economy.

Still loved the sarcasm.

I pretty much agree with what you've said. The government tries to do too many things so they can be all things to all people. We have federal budgets (regardless of party) in the trillions of dollars. Why??

The government seriously needs to be streamlined. There are some things the federal government needs to do, but there is sooooo much that they don't need to be involved in.

Hey, I saw a bumper sticker on the back of a harley today...it said as best I can remember, "Don't steal...the government hates competition"...I waved and laughed as I passed that guy.

Good post, Chris.

The government tries to do too many things so they can be all things to all people.

Why do you suppose that is? Parallels public schools in today's world.

It's because the majority of the citizens of the U.S. want it that way. Take care of everything so I don't have to and that includes the right and the left.

It's because the majority of the citizens of the U.S. want it that way.

And how's that working? Good?? Or are there a number of people who are starting to think that it's not such a wonderful thing.

BTW, if you do think it's a good idea that the government try to do everything for everyone, wouldn't that fit the textbook definition of a "nanny state?"

    Just asking...

Where is the economic utopia the tax cuts where suppose to bring us?

We have been cutting taxes for years.

If tax cuts were the correct policy:

Then, the economic trend would be positive. The tread would be toward prosperity. The results would prove the policy correct.

Yet, clearly we see the results..which speak for themselves. There is no need to post links, no need to cite documentation. There is, in the end, only the results.

The results speak louder than any corporate shill.

Economic catastrophe, unemployment, debt, foreclosures, and homelessness.
